What are the differences between each Six Sigma belt?

The different six sigma belts that one can achieve are yellow, green, black, and Master Black Belt. The four Six Sigma belts represent a different level of expertise in the field of Six Sigma the lowest level is the yellow belt and the highest is the Master Black Belt. The best way to describe the difference between the different belts is to describe the role each belt plays on a project.

Yellow Belt

The yellow belts have a fundamental understanding of the strategies and tools necessary for process improvement and play a support role to Green Belts and Black Belts on Six Sigma projects as a part of a team. Yellow belts work on Six Sigma projects on a part-time basis in addition to their existing job function. Yellow belts are typically responsible for gathering data, mapping the business processes and serving as a subject matter expert regarding some aspects of the process or project. Supervisors, managers, directors, and executives are usually trained at the Yellow Belt level to have a comprehensive knowledge in order to provide managerial support for six sigma projects.

Green Belt

The green belt has more training in Six Sigma than a yellow belt, they implement smaller more localized improvement projects within their area, they also assist with data collection and analysis for black belt projects (i.e. they do the majority of the work during projects), and they are exposed to all the comprehensive aspects of Six Sigma with less focus on the statistical tools.

Black Belt

The black belt's focus is on Six Sigma project management and execution, they are a full time change agent and devote 100% of their time to Six Sigma, they train and mentor project teams and act as a Six Sigma technical expert, and they are well rounded in terms of project management, statistical analysis, financial analysis, meeting facilitation, prioritization, and a range of other value-added capabilities.

Master Black Belt

The Master Black Belt is the highest of the Six Sigma belts one can achieve, they instigate Six Sigma projects, devote 100% of time to Six Sigma initiatives, train, coach, and certify Green Belts and Black Belts, they have managed dozens of Black Belt level projects, they simultaneously lead multiple Six Sigma projects, and they work with business managers to help with assessing and planning business strategies and tactics.
